FAQ

What is the communication group atmosphere?
This communication group is a supportive, play‑based environment where children and families can explore communication at their own pace. The focus is on connection, regulation, and confidence rather than pressure, performance, or “getting it right.” Children and families participate in ways that feel comfortable for them.
What if my child is shy, quiet, or slow to warm up?
No problem! We are glad you are here! Many children need time to feel safe in a new space. We begin each session with sensory‑based play that helps children regulate and settle in. Your child can observe, explore, or join in when they’re ready. All participation styles are welcome and supported.
Does my child need to talk during the group?
No! Communication can look like gestures, eye contact, play, movement, signs, sounds- verbal or device produced, or words. We honor all forms of communication. Children often begin communicating more once they feel regulated, comfortable, safe and connected.
What if my child doesn’t follow directions, the routine or has big feelings?
No problem, we are glad you are here! We expect our friends to express themselves in many different ways! Young children communicate in various ways and often through their behavior along with the big feelings, all are part of learning. The group is designed to support regulation along with communication. You’re welcome to stay close or step away, offer comfort that works best for your family, or take a break if needed. We are here to support in ways that are comfortable for you. The use of visuals or signs to support big feelings and trickier moments are available in addition to providing the reassurance that this group is a supportive environment where any responses from our participants are recognized and supported here!
What if my child has sensory needs?
You are in the right place and we are happy you signed up! We intentionally start each session with sensory play to help children regulate their bodies and prepare for communication activities. A variety of sensory experiences are offered and children can choose what feels right for them. Movement breaks and sensory supports are encouraged.
Is this the same as speech‑language therapy?
No. These groups are enrichment‑based experiences led by a licensed speech‑language pathologist and are not classified as medically necessary therapy. They are not eligible for insurance, FSA, or HSA card use/reimbursement. Participants receive helpful resources and information for communication support, development and growth within a welcoming, compassionate environment.
What if my child has a speech or language delay?
We understand and we look forward to having you with us! Children with varying communication profiles, preferences and needs are all welcome. The group is designed to support communication growth in a low‑pressure, supportive way. If you’re unsure whether the group is a good fit, we’re happy to speak with you and help you make the best decision for your little one.
Do I need to prepare anything before the group?
Just ensure you fill out the waiver for the Play Place, read the policies above and fill out the information that helps us to get to know your little one. Just bring yourself, your little one, a water bottle in the event you may need it, and items for comfort or support if needed (a fidget, a transition support animal or item etc).
What if my child doesn’t participate the “right” way?
There is no “right” way to participate here with Ms. Heather, Blue Feather Communication Collaborative, LLC or The Sensory Play Place. Children are encouraged to and can explore, observe, move, or join in at their own pace. Our goal is to create a space where communication feels safe, enjoyable and accessible for all in any form that may be.
